This just in-college coaches are liars
Rich Rodriguez agreed to be the next coach at Michigan. In the process he proceeded to abandon his West Virginia Mountaineers who are preparing to play in the Fiesta Bowl against the Oklahoma Sooners. This shouldn’t surprise anyone.
Last year Rodriguez accepted the head coaching job at Alabama before having second thoughts (and seeing the roster) and staying at WV. This time though he’s leaving because Michigan gave up the farm to get him. Rodriguez follows in the footsteps of Nick Saban and Bobby Petrino as coaches who abandoned the teams that they were on in order to shoot over to supposed greener pastures. What Rodriguez did is worse than what those other jokers did by far. Rodriguez left guys that he recruited before the biggest game of their college career. One has to wonder what would have happened had WV made it to the BCS Championship? Would he still be leaving his team high and dry? With the Michigan job open did he maybe not prepare WV to play Pitt like he should have so he wouldn’t have to make that decision? Before anyone says that’s impossible stop playing Pollyanna. These coaches are out for themselves, period. They talk a great game about how players need to put team first and often encourage guys to risk injuries by coming back for senior seasons only to not apply those same mantras to their own lives.
The NCAA won’t do anything about this but its laughable that players are penalized one year sometimes two for transferring while coaches can move zip codes and ruin teams without missing a step. As with Arkansas hiring Petrino, remember Michigan that you get what you pay for and when those Michigan winters get colder, don’t be surprised if Rodriguez looks for sunny weather elsewhere.
