I Wonder If He’s Changed His Mind Now?
Georgia basketball coach Dennis Felton took great exception to the SEC’s decision to make his team play twice Saturday.
After Georgia swept both games I wonder if he feels the same way?
Georgia beat Kentucky, 60-56 and Mississippi State, 64-60 in an impressive iron-man display of stamina and guts.
If they lose today to Arkansas I hope that Felton doesn’t pull it out then, as it would really cheapen what his team was able to do yesterday, beating Kentucky and Mississippi State within hours of each other, even after going into overtime in the Kentucky game. Although I disagree with the idea of making the teams play twice, it wasn’t because this was Georgia’s only chance to get in the NCAA. The SEC is not responsible for a team that only won four games during the SEC season not getting in the NCAA, the coach and the players are.
Georgia was not a bubble team; they had nothing to lose during this tournament, and they are playing like it. But they are nowhere near the team that was most affected by the difficulties of this weekend. They are still playing in a familiar arena, they are still close to home, and as I said before, they have nothing to lose.
That being said, if the Bulldogs win today it will be a most impressive feat, and I’ll be cheering for them because I love the little team that could story. But, if they lose I really don’t want to hear the excuses. They have earned their spot in spite of their situation, now it’s their job to finish it. If they lose and don’t go to the tourney, the tornado is not to blame for them not going to the NCAA, 13-16 and 4-12 records in the regular season are the reason for that; this is just a weekend of basketball, the rest of the season still matters; unless the Bulldogs make it not matter.
