Buried Ortiz Jersey Auction Getting Silly
The bidding on this ratty-ass jersey is what is wrong with our great country.
According to FoxSports, bids on the jersey that was buried under the new Yankee Stadium have exceeded 100,000 on eBay:
Bidders from at least19 states were competing in the eBay auction, which ends at 12:30 p.m. today. The winner gets a David Ortiz replica jersey that a Sox-loving construction worker buried in cement at the Stadium
I wonder how many of those bids are legit? I know that the money is going to cancer research and the Jimmy Fund, so at least that’s a good thing, but boy, could the media have done a better job of turning a non-story into a story? I doubt it.
And if I thought that the reason that bids are getting so high is because of the charity, I wouldn’t have a problem with it, but I don’t think that charity is the reason for the outlandish bids. These bids are just another example of people wanting to buy a piece of “sports history”, no matter how media-created, or how dubious. This just encourages more people to go out and do ignorant stuff, so that they can try to get their name attached to their favorite (or in this case, least favorite) team’s history.
