College Football Hall Of Fame Inductees: Ron Simmons-DAMN!
Yeah there are some notables being inducted into the CFHOF this year. Lou Holtz, Troy Aikman, Jay Novacek, and others will…what’s that? What’s that name I see on the list? Could it be?
Damn right it is.
Ron Simmons, aka, Faarooq Asad, aka, Doom Number 1, aka, “The All-American” Ron Simmons (wonder how they came up with that one), aka, “The Powerhouse” Ron Simmons (damn pro wrestlers have alot of gimmick names) is being put into the College Football Hall of Fame.
Simmons was a nose guard for Florida State from 1977-1980 and finished ninth in the running for the Heisman (thank you Wiki). By all accounts he was a great player at FSU (I don’t know, I was freaking one-year; I still thought my toes were entertaining).
But to me he will always be Doom 1, the first African-American World Champion, and the man that turned “Damn” into a catch-phrase.
(The hand touching Simmons in the pic above belonged to Nancy Benoit, whom I thought it was appropriate not to include).
Congrats. You were always our favorite Acolyte.
Ron’s reaction to being told the good news was typical Ron:
