Welcome Back Adam Jones
Break out the Aerosmith, because Pac Man Jones in Back in the Saddle again. The Cowboys shouted, “Bring us your tired, your poor, your cornerbacks named after 80’s Atari games”, and Roger Goodell heard their cry. On Thursday, August28, 2008, Adam Jones was officially welcomed back into the loving arms of the NFL after a season of suspension and an attempt at professional wrestler, or sports entertainment, if you weel (as I channel my inner Dusty Rhodes). Jones had this to say:
“It feels good man, you know, to get a second chance and I just have to take advantage of it,” Jones told The Dallas Morning News. “First and foremost, I don’t want to let myself down, definitely my little girl down. I’m thankful for [Cowboys owner] Jerry [Jones], the fans in Dallas and my teammates for believing in me. I need to keep doing what I’ve been doing to get reinstated, staying with myself and my teammates and staying away from those knuckleheads and just stay focused.”
It’s about time. No I’m not sick. I know that I’ve used Pac Man for my punching bag for quite a while, but the fact is, he’s done enough time. Especially when you consider the fact that he’s not been convicted of anything over a misdemeanor. If he had been connected legally to the Las Vegas strip club shooting, I would have a different opinion, but the fact is, that so far, there have been no convictions against Jones in that case. And whether or not we think that he was involved, our opinions don’t really matter. If he’s not guilty, then he’s not guilty. You can’t keep a man suspended because you suspect that he did something shady, and I continue to say that Roger Goodell’s so-called disciplinary stand, has been nothing more than him picking and choosing who’s naughty and who’s nice. Matt Jones got caught driving around with illegal narcotics in his possession and he’s missed how much time? Sorry Roger, but the law shouldn’t just apply to a guy who has a nickname that is slightly better than Frogger.
The guys a hell of an athlete, and while I’m not going to go so far as to say that I’m going to be cheering for him (it was my hometown team that he left pretty much in the lurch); I will say that I would like to see him make the best of both his ability, and his second/third/fourth chance. As a welcoming back present, I promise not to make fun of him randomly. In fact, I promise that I will not poke any fun at the Pac Man until he says, and/or does something stupid.
Right now Vegas has those odds at 1/1.

What I don’t understand is that if he was suspended by the league, how come he was still bound by its rules (ie no dangerous conduct like ACTUALLY wrestling/motorcycle riding/skydiving etc)?

The contract with the Titans was still binding was basically what it came down to. The NFL has made exceptions for football players wanting to be wrestlers before (Brian Urlacher for example) but they chose not to in his case. I think it was a bit of pettiness and a lot of wanting to protect an “investment”.
