Don’t You Wish The Internet Had Been Around When (1)…

April 08, 2008 By: rock Category: Don't You Wish The Internet Had Been Around When, Video No Comments →

I expect this to be a semi-regular feature here on Threestrikesandout (and by semi-regular I mean whenever I feel like doing it), but I was thinking today about all the infamous sports moments that happened before the Internet and blogging became what they are today; and about how big the blogosphere action would have been had we been around to make you sick of them. I’m going to name an event, probably make fun of it, then post what site that I think would have been the first or best to cover the event right after it happened.  Simple enough premise, so let’s start out with the first one that crossed my mind:

Hal McRae’s meltdown while managing the Kansas City Royals ( I believe it was 93 or 94, but I’m not sure, I know that it was one of those dial-up Internet years).

It’s possible that this is the greatest meltdown ever and it’s a damn shame that it happened before the Internet. This video would have been all over the net 15 minutes after the “put that in your pipe and smoke it” blast that McRae closes with. Look at how popular Dennis Green and Mike Gundy’s meltdowns are. That shit is weak bananas to McRae’s meltdown. He seriously looked like he was going to paint the walls red with reporter blood.

Site most likely to have had this first: Hugging Harold Reynolds

Too bad for the Royals that this couldn’t happen now. It would be the kind of coverage that their team hasn’t been to generate since ‘85, or since George Brett stormed out of the dugout (future moment hint).
