Tile around fiberglass shower surround. Use a notched trowel to apply an even coat of thin-set to the wall below the marked lines. Grout is not appropriate at this location. Adhering plastic and fiberglass tub and shower surrounds to structurally sound drywall plywood ceramic tiles greenboard and cement backerboard. Im putting travetine tile abovearound the top of our fiberglass tubshower surround unit. They either remove the unit and replace it with tile entirely or they choose something like a cultured marble product to cover the walls from floor to ceiling. Has anyone ever done anything like this.
Like high waisted pants underneath the armpits of an old man. They say to put 14 tile backer over the flange to bring it out to the same depth as the 12 green board as shown in this picture. Grout is not appropriate at this location. Tile requires a smooth and flat base but does not adhere properly to fiberglass surfaces.
Finish all other joints prime and paint and then install a border of tile around the perimeter to cover the gap. If the tubtile connection is caulked the water cannot wick out through the bottom grout joint and moisture builds up and is able to feed the mold.
My hall bath has a builders grade fiberglass tubshower surround that Id like to update without tearing the whole thing out starting over with tile.

People dont put tile above a fiberglass shower unit because it looks really odd.
Apply the first row of tiles to the wall using the layout line to maintain a level row. If not too much trouble take down the drywall and replace with 12 cement board then set the tile in modified thinset. They have the same color and texutre as the grout but the adheasion and flexibility of caulk. Add a few rows of decorative tile above the surround to extend it all the way to the ceiling. Might go for the beadboard per your picture in the ensuite when we get the master bedroom.
I sand and use a small bead of paintable mould resistant caulk along the small joint left and then paint.
Most grout manufacturers now make a line of matching grout caulks in both sanded unsanded varieties.
